Being excited and enthused gets a bum rap.
“On January 19, 2004, Dean’s campaign suffered a staggering blow when a last-minute surge by rivals John Kerry and John Edwards led to a disappointing third-place finish for Dean in the 2004 Iowa Democratic caucuses. Dean’s public address that night was widely rebroadcast and portrayed as a media gaffe that ended his campaign. Dean attended a post-caucus rally for his volunteers at the Val-Air Ballroom in West Des Moines, Iowa and delivered his concession speech, aimed at cheering up those in attendance.”(Wikipedia)
“Cruise has made several expressions of his feelings for Holmes to the media, most notably the “couch incident” which took place on the popular The Oprah Winfrey Show of May 23, 2005. Cruise “jumped around the set, hopped onto a couch, fell to one knee and repeatedly professed his love for his new girlfriend”. The phrase “jumping the couch”, fashioned after “jumping the shark“, is used to describe someone “going off the deep end” in public in a manner extreme enough to tarnish his or her reputation. “(Wikipedia)
The two gentlemen suffered for their enthusiasm and excitement. The Howard Dean “scream” finished his political campaign and the Tom Cruise “jumping the couch” hurt his movie career and resulting in his studio dropping him. Both events were mocked by the media. Dean’s liberal views and Tom’s Scientology did not have the effect on their careers as did their moment of excitement.
I liked both gentlemen for their moment of insanity. The world could use more of it.
